Project Goal

The goal of this initiative is to remove financial barriers so more Willmar area students can participate. Youth in Government brings together over 1,500 middle and high school students to simulate the legislative and judicial process. Students serve as legislators, attorneys, judges, lobbyists, media representatives, and executive officials while drafting bills, debating issues, and building leadership skills.

Funding support helps cover registration and transportation costs so that no student is excluded due to financial limitations.

Project Impact

Willmar’s delegation launched in 2025 with five high school students. With strong community partnerships, participation costs were reduced significantly, allowing broader access. For 2026, the goal is to increase student participation, recruit a more diverse group of students, and continue reducing financial barriers.

Participants gain experience in public speaking, collaboration, and civic engagement. Pre- and post-program surveys measure growth in civic knowledge and leadership confidence, with the majority of students reporting increased understanding of the democratic process.

Project Future

Youth in Government will continue as a growing opportunity for Willmar students. While funding remains a key need, local partnerships and community support make continued participation possible.
