Building Community Together: A Recap of the 2026 International Heritage Festival

The Willmar Civic Center transformed into a global village last week as 1,641 attendees gathered for the 2026 International Heritage Festival. From local families who have lived in Kandiyohi County for generations to out of state visitors exploring our region for new careers, the evening was a vibrant reminder of our shared values. The event proved once again that our region thrives when we are building community together.

Success Through Building Community Together

This annual celebration showcased the sights, sounds, and flavors of approximately 12 different countries. The main stage remained a focal point of the evening with a lineup of traditional music and dance that captivated the audience. Between performances, guests explored cultural displays featuring authentic clothing and art. These interactions provide more than just entertainment because they foster the understanding necessary for building community together.

The "Global Flavors" food showcase was a major draw for the record breaking crowd. Local favorites like Somali Star served sambusa while El Viejon provided Mexican rice and Le Copaneco offered fresh baleadas. Other highlights included treats from Asian Noodles, Tentaciones, Pen House Boba, and La Michoacana. Sharing these traditional dishes allows neighbors to connect on a personal level. This simple act of breaking bread is a cornerstone of building community together.

A Legacy of Collaboration

An event of this scale is only possible through the dedication of over 20 year round volunteers and dozens of local partners. We want to extend a special thank you to our sponsors including the City of Willmar, Ridgewater College, CentraCare, and the Southwest Initiative Foundation. Their support along with contributions from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota and the Willmar Area Community Foundation ensured that the festival remained free for all.

The inclusion of free shuttle transportation by Kubie Transportation allowed even more neighbors to participate in the festivities. This level of collaboration between business, education, and government is exactly what we mean when we talk about building community together. It ensures that everyone in the Willmar Lakes Area feels a true sense of belonging.

As we look toward 2027, the planning committee is already hard at work to make next year even better. We invite you to stay connected with Vision 2040 and join us in our ongoing mission. By participating in these cultural celebrations, you play an essential role in building community together in a place we are all proud to call home.
